Bangladesh and the Philippines planning ahead for 5G

Partnerships and plans relating to 5G have recently been announced in Bangladesh and the Philippines.

According to local press reports the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) hopes to have all district headquarters in Bangladesh covered with 5G technology by 2021, suggesting, through a spokesperson, that the service will be available by the last quarter of 2020 or the first quarter of 2021.

Already a BTRC-appointed commission is working on guidelines and likely pricing for spectrum in the 2.6GHz and 3.5GHz bands. If this is accomplished by early 2020 licenses will be allocated by the end of the year. Countrywide 5G coverage is set for 2026.

Meanwhile Philippines company NOW Corporation, together with its telecom arm NOW Telecom Company, has entered into a strategic partnership with Korea’s SK Telecom. SK Telecom will offer its expertise to help NOW develop 5G technologies and build a 5G network in the Philippines.

The agreement includes such areas of collaboration and development for 5G in the Philippines as technical roadmap planning; network conceptualization and design; 5G core network training; establishment of 5G standalone network commercial infrastructure; in-building solutions; and 5G B2B service development.

As a strategic partner, SK Telecom will also extend its new 5G-based applications and solutions to provide enterprises and home broadband users in the Philippines with what the partners call ‘game-changing and unparalleled experience’.

NOW Corporation is engaged in software licenses and services, IT manpower and resource augmentation, broadband, and wireless cable TV. NOW Telecom is one of four cellular mobile license holders in the Philippines.
